Epinephrine is a chemical that narrows blood vessels and opens airways in the lungs
These effects can reverse severe low blood pressure, wheezing, severe skin itching, hives, and other symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Advantages

EpiPen Auto-Injector is used to treat signs and symptoms of a life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), which cause redness of the skin, tightness in the throat, breathing problems and/or a decrease in blood pressure. A life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) can be caused by triggers such as food, stinging and biting insects, medicines, latex, or even exercise.
If you, your child or someone you care  for shows signs or symptoms allergic reaction inject the health care professional-prescribed EpiPen or EpiPen Jr. immediately, then promptly call your family doctor and seek immediate medical attention. EpiPen or EpiPen Jr should only be administered to the patient who is suffering from the allergies.
Symptoms
EpiPen® (epinephrine) 0.3 mg and EpiPen Jr® (epinephrine) 0.15 mg Auto-Injectors are for emergency treatments (anaphylaxis) caused by allergens, exercise, or unknown triggers; and for people who are at increased risk for these reactions. EpiPen and EpiPen Jr are intended for immediate self administration as emergency supportive therapy only. Seek immediate emergency medical treatment after use.

Be Safe

  • Do not  put your thumb, fingers, or hand over the tip of the auto-injector. Do NOT remove the cap until you are ready to use EpiPen auto-injector.
  • Inject EpiPen auto-injecto only  into the outer thigh. Never inject EpiPen auto-injector into hands, fingers, feet, or toes. Doing so may cause a loss of blood flow and result in tissue damage to these areas. In case you accidentally inject EpiPen auto-injector, seek immediate emergency medical attention.
  • It would be helpful to train others how to give EpiPen auto-injector in case you are unable to give it to yourself when you have a reaction.
  • Diabetics – EpiPen auto-injector will raise your blood sugar. High blood sugar may make you feel confused, drowsy, or thirsty. It can also make you flush, breathe faster, or have a fruit-like breath odor. When these symptoms occur,inform your doctor right away.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you are pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using EpiPen auto-injector while you are pregnant. It is not known if EpiPen auto-injector is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use EpiPen auto-injector, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Things to Remember

To make sure epinephrine is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
  • Heart disease or high blood pressure;
  • A heart rhythm disorder;
  • coronary artery disease;
  • Parkinson’s disease;
  • Diabetes; or
  • Thyroid disorder.
FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether epinephrine will harm an unborn baby.
It is not known whether epinephrine passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
In an emergency situation it may not be possible to tell your caregivers if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

Side Effects

Most common side effects include increase in heart rate, stronger or irregular heartbeat, sweating, nausea and vomiting, difficulty breathing, paleness, dizziness, weakness or shakiness, headache, apprehension, nervousness or anxiety.

Disadvantages

An overdose could be a great disadvantage when you use Epinephrine
The symptoms of an overdose might include chest pain; confusion; extreme paleness or coldness of the skin; fast or irregular heartbeat; one-sided weakness; severe headache or dizziness; slurred speech; trouble breathing; vision problems.
